Continence Service Manager at The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust
Gill started her nursing career in N/Devon in gynaecology. She then moved to Shrewsbury again on a gynae ward before taking a leap into research. This project was to implement research into primary care and in particular was to do with continence. The project was with the King’s Fund. Through this time frame the work was published in several books and articles written in nursing journals. Gill was fortunate enough to be kept on and thus her journey into bladder/bowel dysfunction commenced.
It is now 20 years and through this time have helped established a team when there was not one, developed a pathway before NICE 2006 had thought of it. Other pathways have been developed and this has been with collaboration working with the pharmacists has been invaluable. Gill has found different ways to improve how the service can develop and has now got a clinic within a pharmacy setting and this is proving to be very successful.
The service operates 7 days now; the nursing homes have found this to be useful as they can contact their dedicated nurse at weekends.
Gill has written articles for nursing journals and is part of an expert panel looking at male health which is hoping to get the work approved by NICE.
